Overview

The Substation Transformer is the largest energy storage device in LF PowerGrid. It stores surplus power from sources (solar panels, generators) and releases it when downstream demand exceeds supply — acting as a buffer that keeps your base powered through the night or during peak loads.

How It Works

The transformer operates in three modes depending on the power balance:

  • Charging: When upstream supply exceeds downstream demand, surplus energy is stored at up to 80 u/s. Due to 88% charge efficiency, only 88% of input energy is actually stored.
  • Discharging: When demand exceeds supply, the transformer supplements from stored energy at up to 120 u/s.
  • Passthrough: When supply matches demand, energy passes through without touching storage.

The output can be toggled on/off via the built-in switch, acting as a gate to cut power to everything downstream.

LED Indicators

The transformer has 7 LED indicators, each representing approximately 14.3% of total capacity:

  • All 7 green: Fully charged (50,000 u)
  • Partial green: Partially charged (each LED = ~7,143 u)
  • All off: Empty or unpowered

Tips

  • At 88% charge efficiency, you need ~56,800 u of input energy to fully charge from empty.
  • A single Solar Panel T2 (50 u/s) charges from empty in about 19 minutes of daylight.
  • The built-in switch lets you cut power to downstream devices without disconnecting wires.
  • Place in a secure location — losing your transformer means losing your stored energy.
  • Self-discharge is negligible: a full transformer loses less than 1% per day when idle.
